NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Furman (+35) won the 2022 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship Tuesday at the par-72, 6,004 yard Barefoot Landing Resort's Dye Golf Course in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
With the win, the Paladins, who captured their 19th league title, clinched the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, which will be held May 9-11. The NCAA field will be announced live on the Golf Channel beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27.
Due to inclement weather on Monday, the Paladins completed round two on Tuesday morning before playing round three.
Furman placed four players among the top nine, including sophomore Sophia Burnett (+5) who finished fourth after tallying a final-round 79. She finished six strokes back of individual medalist Dorata Zalewska (-1) of Chattanooga, who scored a hole in one on No. 17 to solidify her one-stroke victory.
Senior Sarah-Eve Rhéaume (+8) posted an eagle on the par-5 No. 12 and added a birdie on No. 5 to finish in eighth place, and junior Anna Morgan (+9), who was honored with the 2022 SoCon Pinnacle Award, which is given annually to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA on the championship team, tied for ninth place. She paced the Paladins with a final-round 71, notching birdies on No. 5 and No. 12.
Senior Kyra Cox (+22) carded a team-high five birdies and posted four birdies in five holes from No. 12 through No. 16. She finished the tournament tied for 29th with freshman Savannah Hylton (+22), who shot an 84 with a birdie on No. 4 in the day's final round.
"It's really exciting to win this championship," said Furman head coach Jeff Hull. "Conditions were tough today, and our players really fought hard. When we got to the back nine, it was pretty tight, then Sarah-Eve made a great eagle on No. 12, and Kyra really showed her leadership as a senior and made a lot of birdies coming in. The 18th hole was kind of interesting, but we played really solid, and we're so excited to bring the SoCon Championship back home."
Wofford (+39) finished second, followed by Mercer (+44) in third place.
