WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Furman sophomore Will Morlan (-9) fired a second-round 63 to tie for first Monday at the completion of two rounds of the Old Town Collegiate, which is being hosted by Wake Forest at the par 70, 6,966 yard Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Paladins (-7) are in third place after shooting a 274, the fourth-lowest round in program history, in Monday's second round. Â
Furman has three players among the top 25, including Alpharetta, Ga., native Morlan, who tied the second-lowest individual round in Paladin history with a 63 in round two. Morlan teed off on No. 10 in the second round and notched three birdies on the back to turn at 3-under before posting four-consecutive birdies on No. 1 through No. 4. After a bogey on No. 5, he rebounded with an additional birdie on No. 8 to finish the round at 7-under. Morlan's round was just one shot off the Paladin record of 62, which was tallied by Noble Judy in 2003.
"We're really proud of Will, as he played great all day," said Furman head coach Matt Davidson. "Honestly, if he had made a few more very makeable putts, his score could have been even lower. He gave himself so many great birdie looks. It should be a fun day tomorrow."
Morlan opened the day with a 68 with four birdies, including back to back birdies on No. 11 and No. 12. He is tied with Southern Mississippi's Cameron Clarke (-9) for the individual lead, two strokes ahead of Thongpipat Rattanayanon (-7) of Southern Mississippi, who sits in third place.
Senior Sam Lape (-4) is tied for seventh after two rounds of play. He carded a 68 with five birdies, including four-straight from No. 4 through No. 7, in round one and added another 68, this time with three birdies, in the second round. Â
Senior Ross Funderburke (+1) enters Tuesday's final round tied for 25th after shooting a 71 with three birdies in the first round and recording an even 70 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 9 in the day's second round. Seniors Walker Crosby (+5) and Reynolds Lambert (+5) are tied for 44th after two rounds. Crosby shot a 72 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 18 in the opening round and carded a 73 in the afternoon round, while Lambert collected five birdies in seven holes from No. 17 through No. 5 in round one, finishing with a 72, then eagled the par-5 No. 4 en route to a 73 in round two.
Kansas State (-16) leads the field by three strokes after two rounds. Southern Mississippi (-11) is in second place, just four strokes ahead of the Paladins (-7). Penn State (-6) sits in fourth, followed by host Wake Forest (-5) in fifth place.Â
Furman ranks second with a 4.02 scoring average on the par 4s. The Paladins are also second with 119 pars and third with 32 birdies.
The Paladins will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 8:25 a.m. on Monday in the final round of the 54-hole tournament and will play in a group with Kansas State and Southern Mississippi. Admission is free and fans are welcome. Results and live tournament scoring are available via http://www.golfstat.com.
