RALEIGH, N.C. -- No. 21 Vanderbilt handed Furman a 5-0 loss in the opening day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.
The Commodores (2-0) won two of three doubles matches to take the first point. Anna Ross and Holly Staff slipped past sophomores Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder, 7-5, at flight one, and Celia-Belle Mohr and Anessa Lee, who rank 55th nationally, defeated sophomore Alexa Griffith and senior Madison Dillon, 6-1, at flight three. The flight two match was unfinished, with Marcella Cruz and Bridget Stammel barely hanging on, 6-5, over Furman sophomores Marissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson, who had erased a 5-2 deficit to tie the match at 5-all.
Vanderbilt scored four singles points in straight sets to seal the match. Mohr, who ranks 33rd nationally in singles, topped Dawson, 6-3, 6-1, at flight one, and 35th-ranked Stammel held off Pennings, 6-3, 6-3, at number three. At flight four, Lee topped Dillon, 6-2, 6-0, and at number six, Cruz downed Griffith, 6-1, 6-2.
Matches at flights two and five were unfinished.
Furman (0-3) will face Illinois Sunday at 11 a.m. in Raleigh in the final day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
