Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's soccer team will host its annual Cancer Awareness Match on Thursday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium when the Paladins face the Samford Bulldogs.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and admission is free. Thursday's contest, sponsored by Bon Secours, will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live statistics provided through StatBroadcast at FurmanPaladins.com.
The Paladins will play in honor of all those battling cancer and in memory of all who have lost their battle, including Lorelei Goila, the late mother of Paladin junior
Ashlyn Goila, who lost her battle with breast cancer in September of 2021. Goila was a cheerleader and member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority as a student at Furman, where she also met her husband Tom, who was a member of the Furman football team. The match will also be played to honor the memory of Shauna Yelton, the late wife of Samford head coach Todd Yelton, who lost her fight with cervical cancer in November of 2015.
Furman will wear pink jerseys for Thursday's match and fans are able to
bid on the jerseys online. The auction will remain open until the end of Thursday's contest.
The Paladins enter Thursday's showdown unbeaten in their last five matches, sporting a 5-3-4 overall record and 1-0-3 mark in league play. Last time out,
Madison Luckett netted her first goal of the season to help Furman earn a 1-1 draw against Chattanooga on Sunday at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Thursday's match will be the 23
rd meeting between the Paladins and Bulldogs with Samford holding a 12-6-4 series lead. The Bulldogs claimed a 4-0 victory in last season's meeting en route to earning a share of the Southern Conference regular season title.
Samford, the conference's preseason favorite, comes to Greenville at 7-3-3 overall and 3-1-0 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs have posted three consecutive shutouts in league play after dropping their SoCon opener versus Western Carolina.
