Furman Softball Invitational Begins Friday At Pepsi Stadium

Paladins Host Sacred Heart At 7 P.M.

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman Paladins will host Bellarmine, Binghamton, Sacred Heart, and Towson in the Furman Softball Invitational this weekend, February 17-19, at Pepsi Stadium.

The 12-team tournament begins with four games on Friday, features five matchups on Saturday, and concludes with three on Sunday. Admission to all 12 games at Pepsi Stadium is free. Furman's four games this weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest versus Sacred Heart on Friday, will be streamed live on ESPN+.

The Paladins (1-2) dropped their home opener to seventh-ranked Clemson, 10-0, on Tuesday night after splitting their first two games of 2023 at the rain-shortened River City Leadoff in Jacksonville, Fla. Senior Riley Ludlam collected two of Furman's four base hits on Tuesday evening, including a double.

Furman's Friday night opponent, Sacred Heart, opens its season this weekend. The Pioneers posted a 13-42 overall record and 5-19 mark in the NEC last season before being picked to finish fourth this year in the NEC preseason poll.

Binghamton sports a 1-4 mark after earning its lone win last weekend versus FGCU in Fort Myers, Fla. The Bearcats, 22-23 overall and 7-8 in the America East Conference in 2022, dropped two games in Fort Myers to the SoCon's UNCG Spartans. Binghamton was picked fourth in the preseason America East poll.

Towson, now in its 28th season under the leadership of head coach Lisa Costello, saw all five of their games washed out last weekend at the Kickin' Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina. After finishing 14-33 overall and 4-16 in league play a year ago, the Tigers were picked eighth in preseason polling of the CAA's head coaches.

Bellarmine comes to Greenville with an 0-4 record after dropping a pair of games to Toledo and a pair to Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C., last weekend. The Knights, who were 10-41 overall and 1-23 in league play a year ago, were tabbed to finish 13th in the Atlantic Sun Conference by the league's head coaches.
