Beal, Buzelis Lead Furman Past Longwood, 19-14

Paladins Win Second Straight Big South Opener

Greenville, S.C. – Meagan Beal and Sophia Buzelis combined for 11 goals on Wednesday evening as the Furman women's lacrosse team opened Big South play with a 19-14 victory over the Longwood Lancers at Paladin Stadium.

With the win, Furman improves to 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Longwood drops to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the league.

The Paladins opened the game on a 4-1 run before the Lancers answered with seven consecutive goals to take an 8-4 lead with 6:55 left in the second quarter. Furman ended the first half with three straight goals to trail 8-7 at halftime.

The Paladins continued their run into the second half, registering the first four goals to make it seven consecutive going back to the 5:59 mark of the second quarter. Four different players registered a goal within the opening 6:27 of the third quarter with Molly Faul's second of the contest extending Furman's lead to 11-8. Longwood would get as close as two points twice in the third with the last coming at 11-9 with 5:56 remaining.

The final 20:10 of the game saw the Paladins outscore the Lancers 8-5 which included a run of four straight goals to start the fourth quarter. Beal scored twice while Buzelis and Paige Harman both added one to put Furman ahead 18-11 at the 7:13 mark. Less than four minutes later, Hannah Dintino pushed the Paladins advantage back to seven, 19-12, with her second goal of the game.

Longwood collected the last two goals to put the final score at 19-14.

On a night in which she scored her 100th career goal, Beal paced Furman offensively with a season high seven points after matching her career best of six goals. Buzelis compiled a career high five goals while Dintino poured in five points on two goals and tying her career high of three assists. Sophie Shaw won a career high nine draws and Katelyn Sousa tied her season best of three caused turnovers. In goal, Lily Rathbun grabbed 10 saves and tied for the team-lead of three ground balls along with Grace Gibson.

Sophia Passa paced the Lancers with five points on four goals and one assist, and Claire Libby and Lauren Cerretani both recorded a hat trick. Riley McDonald dished out two assists. In goal, Amelia Carlile totaled seven saves.

The Paladins forced Longwood into 17 turnovers throughout the contest while finishing with 18 ground balls and holding a 19-16 advantage in draws.

Furman remains at home on Saturday afternoon hosting Campbell at 1 p.m.
