2022-23 SoCon Academic Honor Roll
Greenville, S.C. – A total of 233 Furman student-athletes have been named to the 2022-23 Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, which was released on Wednesday by the league office.
Furman's 233 selections represent the 18 intercollegiate sports offered by the university in 2022-23.
The academic honor roll originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the award to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the academic year, were eligible the entire academic year, and were members of the final squad lists.
Sixteen Paladins garnered perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the 2022-23 school year: Adam Beucler (men's cross country, track & field/health sciences), Madison Dillon (women's tennis/business administration), DJ Durham, Jr. (football/health sciences), Hannah Farr (women's soccer/sustainability science), Chrissy Fleming (softball/applied mathematics), Helen Gutierrez (women's soccer/health sciences), Chloe Johnson (women's golf/undeclared), Faith Johnson (women's golf/undeclared), Josh Powers (men's cross country, track & field/Spanish), Grace van Rij (women's basketball/strategic design), Abigail Robertson (women's cross country, track & field/health sciences), Abby Ross (women's soccer/health sciences), Jason Smith (men's tennis/health sciences), Jonna Strange (women's cross country, track & field/health sciences), Ben VanderWal (men's basketball/undeclared), and Luca Victoria Vocke (women's tennis/business administration).
Fifty-nine Furman student-athletes received the SoCon Commissioner's Medal, which were accorded to student-athletes sporting GPAs of 3.8 or better.
The SoCon had a total of 2,471 selections to the Academic Honor Roll, third-most in SoCon history. Of this year's qualifiers, 706 earned the Commissioner's Medal, awarded to student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.8 or higher throughout the year, and 225 posted perfect 4.0 GPAs.
The Paladins' SoCon Academic Honor Roll tally matches the athletic success it registered this past year. Furman captured six SoCon championships during the school year, claiming the regular season crowns in men's basketball and women's tennis, as well as tournament titles in men's cross country, women's cross country, men's basketball, and women's golf. Four Paladin teams – football, men's basketball, men's golf, and women's golf – qualified for NCAA Tournament play.
For the second consecutive year, Furman athletics combined to produce the SoCon's female and male athlete of the year, respectively. The Paladins also netted five All-Americans, six SoCon Players of the Year, four SoCon Freshmen of the Year, two SoCon Coaches of the Year, and 68 all-conference performers.
