Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's basketball team, winners of five straight games, open an instate road swing on Saturday with a 6 p.m. tip-off at Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C., versus the Wofford Terriers.
Saturday's renewal of the Furman-Wofford rivalry will air live on Nexstar affiliates throughout the region and will also be streamed live on ESPN+. Furman (11-9, 5-2 SoCon) climbed within a game of first place in the Southern Conference standings and notched its fifth consecutive victory with a 78-68 win over first-place Samford on Wednesday evening at Timmons Arena. The victory snapped Samford's nation-leading 17-game winning streak. Redshirt senior
Marcus Foster, who has averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds in his last three games since returning from injury, paced the Paladins with 22 points and 11 rebounds while
Alex Williams added 16 points. Samford's 68-point performance marked just the third time the Bulldogs were held below 75 points this season.
After starting league play 0-2, Furman has won five straight thanks to its top three scorers returning from injury, improved outside shooting, and stingy defense. The Paladins suffered through a four-game shooting slump in which they shot just 16.2% (18-111) from three-point range before connecting on 42.2% (57-135) of their threes over the last five games. Furman, which has allowed an average of 76.3 points per game, has also limited its last six opponents to 73 or fewer points.
Saturday marks the 154
th meeting between I-85 rivals Furman and Wofford with the Paladins holding a 91-62 series lead. The Paladins have won each of the last four meetings between the schools, including two straight in Spartanburg. Last season, Furman prevailed, 96-82, at Richardson Indoor Stadium before downing the Terriers, 80-67, at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville.
Wofford dropped its second straight game, a 79-65 decision versus Chattanooga, on Wednesday night in Spartanburg. The Terriers, led by former Furman assistant coach Dwight Perry, enter the weekend at 11-9 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon.
Following Saturday's road test at Wofford, Furman travels to face The Citadel on Wednesday, January 31, at McAlister Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C.
