Furman Football Adds Two Graduate Transfers

Clay Hendrix
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach Clay Hendrix announced today the addition of two graduate transfers to the Paladins' program.

The additions include Jalen Tate, a 6-foot, 198-pound safety from Georgia State, and Joshua Burrell, a 6-foot-2, 216-pound tight end from Florida State.

Tate, from Pelzer, S.C.,. has one year of eligibility remaining, while Burrell, a Blythewood, S.C., product, has two years of eligibility available.

Tate, a Shrine Bowl selection at Greenville (4A) High School before signing with Georgia State, registered playing time in 37 games and was credited with 56 tackles in three seasons of play with the Panthers.  He contributed 13 tackles in 2023, helping GSU to a 7-6 season, capped by a 45-22 triumph over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.  In 2021, his sophomore season, he logged 20 tackles over 13 games on a Panther squad that went 8-5 and claimed a 51-20 victory over Ball State in the TaxAct Camellia Bowl.

Burrell, who ranked as the state's No. 4 prospect and was a Shrine Bowl pick out of Blythewood (5A) High School in 2020, saw action in 21 games over three seasons at Florida State, where he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Honor Roll three times, including his redshirt 2021 campaign.

Tate and Burrell are both on campus and taking part in Furman summer workouts.

Furman, coming off a 10-3 campaign highlighted by a Southern Conference championship and quarterfinal round appearance in the FCS playoffs last fall, kicks off the 2024 season on Aug. 31 at Ole Miss.
