CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team concluded play Sunday at the ITA Carolinas Regional Championships at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament showcased the top women's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Freshmen Sasha Dimitrov and Lillie Murphy and junior Macy Hitchcock each won their opening match in the qualifying singles draw. Dimitrov defeated Ruby Broadbent of Appalachian State, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, while Murphy blew past East Carolina's Ivona Savekova, 6-2, 6-4. Hitchcock beat Marra Bruce of College of Charleston, 6-3, 6-0, then advanced to the main singles draw when Whitley Pate of Wake Forest withdrew due to injury.
In the consolation singles draw, Hitchcock came from behind to beat Coastal Carolina's Francisca Laundes, 6(5)-7, 6-4, [10-7], in the opening round then defeated Wake Forest's Sankavi Gownder, 7-6(1), 4-6, [10-3] in the quarterfinals. In the same draw, freshman Elle Warren won her first match, where she posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jaiden McKee of College of Charleston.
In doubles action, Warren and Murphy teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Prisca Abbas and Lucia Aranda of Charlotte in the opening round of the main draw, while Hitchcock and Dimitrov topped UNCW's Elif Albayrak and Eda Arli, 8-3 in the same round.
Furman will compete at the SoCon Fall Championship, Oct. 24-26, in Chattanooga, Tenn.
