Wagner Named Southern Conference Defensive Player Of The Week

Sophomore Helped Furman Extend Its Winning Streak To Five Matches

Greenville, S.C. – Furman sophomore Ryan Wagner has been named Southern Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday by the league office.

Wagner netted his first goal of the season and paced the seventh-ranked Paladins to a 2-0-0 record this past week. Last Tuesday, the Leawood, Kan., native headed in his first goal to open the scoring in the Paladins' 2-1 non-conference triumph over UNC Asheville. Just four days later, Wagner anchored the Furman backline as the Paladins posted a 2-0 shutout of 18th-ranked UNC Greensboro in the annual Quinn Game for Down Syndrome Awareness at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The victory over UNCG marked Furman's fifth straight win and improved the Paladins to 11-1-4 overall and 3-0-1 in SoCon play.

The Paladins, tied for first in the SoCon standings, travel to Wofford on Saturday at 7 p.m. with the SoCon regular season title and No. 1 seed in the upcoming SoCon Men's Soccer Championship on the line. The regular season finale will be streamed live on ESPN+.
