The Paladins (20-8, 8-7 SoCon) are looking to continue their late-season momentum after completing a regular season sweep of Samford with an 80-72 victory in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday night. The win gave the Paladins their 14
th 20-win season in school history and seventh in the last nine seasons. Smith paced the Paladins with a career-high 32 points while
Cooper Bowser added 16 as Furman topped Samford for the 11
th time in the last 14 meetings.
Entering Saturday, Furman holds a one-game lead on VMI for the sixth and final first round bye in the SoCon Men's Basketball Championship and is just one game behind ETSU and Wofford, who are tied for fourth place with three regular season games remaining. The Paladins are going for a regular season split with the Keydets after VMI claimed a 91-82 decision in Lexington, Va., in the first meeting between the schools last month. Smith and
Charles Johnston scored 18 points apiece for Furman in the first meeting.
Furman holds a 71-38 series lead versus the Keydets and has won eight straight series meetings played in Greenville. The Paladins have won 15 of the last 19 overall encounters with VMI.
Following Saturday's game, Furman concludes its regular season home schedule on Wednesday night when it hosts The Citadel Bulldogs at the Well.
