Stonehill Holds Off Furman Rally, 9-6

Burroughs Drive In Three Runs

Greenville, S.C. – Stonehill took advantage of four Furman errors to score eight unearned runs and held off a late rally to down the Paladins, 9-6, Saturday evening in the nightcap of the Paladin Invitational at Pepsi Stadium.

The Skyhawks (3-1) plated six runs in the opening two frames against freshman starter Lily O'Bryan to take a 6-0 lead. Stonehill opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first. A base on ball and an error started the rally and Shannon Conte put the Skyhawks in front with a two-run double. A walk and back-to-back Furman errors opened the door in the second inning and Harper Sullivan highlighted the frame with a two-run base hit.

Furman trimmed the margin to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth on Sylvia Burroughs' two-run blast and added a third run an inning later when Katie Peeler tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ansley Chiang.

Stonehill answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Another Paladin error and a pair of walks set the table before Sullivan drove in two runs with a single up the middle. Rachel Hawkins RBI single helped Furman to a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Skyhawks answered again thanks to a walk and a passed ball in the seventh.

Sullivan went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Conte finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Skykawk offense while Alexa Hospodar (1-1) earned the win in the circle. She allowed five runs on six hits over five innings. Sarah Taylor limited Furman to an unearned run in two innings of work to pick up the save.

O'Bryan suffered the loss in her collegiate debut after giving up six runs, one earned, on three hits over 1.1 innings. Emme Buzhardt fanned nine batters while allowing three unearned runs in 5.2 innings of relief.

Burroughs went 2-for-3 with a double, homer, and three RBIs for the Paladins.

The tournament concludes with three games on Sunday, including the Paladins (1-2) hosting Evansville at 1:10 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
