Greenville, S.C. – Evansville jumped out to a 6-2 lead en route to a 7-4 victory over Furman in the final game of the Paladin Invitational Sunday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
The Purple Aces opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first on Callie Meinel's single through the right side before Furman answered with two of its own in the bottom of the inning.
Logan Gunter doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Madison Petty to get the Paladins on the board and back-to-back doubles from
Sylvia Burroughs and
Rachel Hawkins evened the score at 2-2.
Two-out base hits from Niki Bode and Moragan Adams brought two more runs in the for the Purple Aces in the top of the third inning before Evansville pushed the lead to 6-2 with a pair in the top of the sixth. A bunt single and a fielder error put runners on the corners ahead of Taylor Howe's two-run single to left field.
Caitlin Goldwait and
Hope Marshburn drove in runs for the Paladins in the bottom of the sixth to trim the deficit to 6-4, but Evansville added a seventh-inning insurance runs and Elle Jarrett retired Furman in the bottom of the frame to end the game.
Starter Gracie Hollingsworth (2-0) earned the victory for Evansville (3-2) after allowing four runs on five hits over five-plus innings in the circle. Jarrett came on to toss two scoreless frames. Kynadee Warner collected three hits for the Purple Aces while Bode went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Paladin starter
Angelina Ricciardi (1-1) suffered the loss allowing four runs on six hits in four innings. Gunter went 2-for-4 at the plate for Furman.
The Paladins (1-3) are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday evening with a single game at Clemson. First pitch on ACC Network Xtra is slated for 6 p.m. at McWhorter Stadium in Clemson, S.C.
