Buzhardt Pitches Furman To Doubleheader Split At Presbyterian 4-2, 1-8

Burroughs Belts Second Homer Of The Season

Clinton, S.C. – Righthander Emme Buzhardt pitched Furman to a 4-2 victory over Presbyterian in game one as the Paladins earned a doubleheader split versus the Blue Hose Wednesday afternoon at the PC Softball Complex in Clinton, S.C.

Game 1: Furman 4, Presbyterian 2

Furman rallied from a 2-0 first-inning deficit to down the Blue Hose, 4-2, in the opening game of the day.

Buzhardt worked around a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first to toss a complete game without allowing an earned run while upping her record to 4-5. The Saluda, S.C., native scattered four hits and recorded two strikeouts to earn the win.

Caitlin Goldwait's RBI single plated Grayson Snead with the Paladins' first run in the top of the second and junior Sylvia Burroughs opened the top of the third with a solo blast to left field, her second home run of the season, to even the game at 2-2. Burroughs drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and pinch runner Jordynn Lawrence scored the go-ahead run on Lauralee Scott's RBI single.

Furman added a fourth run in the top of the sixth inning as Kate Stoltzfus drove a two-out, RBI double into the gap to drive in Ansley Chiang. Buzhardt retired 11 of the final 12 batters she faced to seal the victory.

Goldwait, Burroughs, and Kiley Perry each recorded two hits apiece in game one while Rachel Hawkins worked a pair of walks. Perry doubled twice to raise her team-high total to 10 doubles.

Peyton Duncan (6-4) took the loss for the Blue Hose, allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings. She surrendered four walks and struck out three.

Game 2: Presbyterian 8, Furman 1

Kasey Wolfe went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and hurled a one-hitter to power PC to an 8-1 win in the nightcap of Wednesday's twinbill.

After scoring single runs in the first and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead, the Blue Hose plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game. Gracie Decuir's triple drove in the first run of the frame before the outfielder crossed the plate on Audrey Burton's infield single. Wolfe and Kendall Owens ripped back-to-back RBI doubles to up the PC lead to 6-0 and chase Paladin starter Angelina Ricciardi. Wolfe added her second extra-base hit of the game with a two-run homer in the sixth inning to extend the margin to 8-1.

Burton, Wolfe, and Owens each registered three hits in game two to lead Presbyterian's 12-hit outburst. DeCuir added a pair of hits.

Wolfe struck out two batters and allowed just one walk to improve to 3-4 in the circle. Ricciardi (4-4) allowed six runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings of work to absorb the loss. She walked two batters and fanned four.

Burroughs collected the Paladins' lone hit in the nightcap.

Furman (10-19) is idle until opening Southern Conference play with its first ever trip to Wofford for a three-game series March 22-23. The Blue Hose (14-12) open a three-game set versus USC Upstate on Friday.
