Box Score 2 Spartanburg, S.C. – Wofford rallied for a 6-5 walk-off win in the 10
th inning of game one and Abby Greenwood fanned seven en route to a 5-3 victory in game two as the Terriers swept Furman on the opening day of Southern Conference play Saturday afternoon at Hope Field.
Game 1: Wofford 6, Furman 5 (10 inn.)
Brianna Stanley delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10
th to rally Wofford to a 6-5 victory over Furman in the opening game of the series.
After Furman's
Sylvia Burroughs gave the Paladins a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10
th on an RBI single that plated
Caitlin Goldwait, Wofford Kaytlin Greenwood, the international tiebreaking runner stood on third base with one out when Rivers Sampson lined a base hit down the right field line to even the game. Sampson scored from second on Stanley's base hit to center field to cap the rally and give the Terriers the win in the SoCon opener for both teams.
The Terriers jumped in front in the bottom of the first on Hope Ingle's two-out, RBI single up the middle and doubled their lead when the Wofford first baseman raced home on a Paladin miscue.
Furman evened the game in the top of the fourth.
Sylvia Burroughs reached base on the Paladins' first hit of the day before being erased on a fielder's choice.
Kiley Perry worked a two-out walk to keep the inning alive and
Rachel Hawkins laced a 2-run double into the gap to knot the game at 2-2.
The Terrier regained the lead with a pair of runs off a crucial Furman error in the bottom of the sixth, but the Paladins pulled even in the seventh when pinch hitter
Taylor Miller lined a double off the outstretched glove of the centerfielder to drive in two runs.
Margaret Axelson (9-3) picked up the win for Wofford in a complete-game effort. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits and in 10 innings while walking two batters and fanning three. Furman's
Emme Buzhardt suffered the loss to fall to 4-6. She allowed six runs, just two earned, on seven hits over 9.1 innings and struck out eight batters.
Stanley and Ingle each registered two hits for Wofford. Burroughs went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Paladins while Hawkins and Miller drove in two runs apiece.
Game 2: Wofford 5, Furman 3
Wofford rallied from an early 2-run deficit to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two.
Furman took the lead in the top of the first inning. Goldwait reached on a leadoff single and later scored when the throw to the plate was late on
Kiley Perry's grounder to first base. Perry and
Kate Stoltzfus executed a double steal to up the lead to 2-0 before Stanley hammered a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the first to halve the Paladin advantage.
The Paladins and Terriers traded runs in the third inning. Burroughs, making her first career start at second base, belted a solo home run to left field in the top of the frame before Kate Platte lined a leadoff triple down the left field line and scored on Rivers Sampson's groundout to trim the Furman lead back to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning.
Wofford took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Platte lined a run-scoring base hit to left field and later raced home from third on Stanley's sacrifice fly to right field. Ingle upped the Terrier lead to 5-3 with a solo blast to left field.
Greenwood fanned seven batters in a complete-game performance without allowing a walk to earn the win for Wofford. She gave up three runs on seven hits to up her record to 5-3.
Scott took the loss for Furman to fall to 2-6. The senior allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Scott walked one batter and fanned four in the loss.
Goldwait and Burroughs recorded two hits apiece for Furman.
The Paladins (10-21, 0-2 SoCon) and Terriers (18-10, 2-0 SoCon) conclude the three-game weekend series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and the series finale will be streamed live on ESPN+.
