High Point, N.C. – Sophomore Daniel Lugo scored two goals to propel High Point past Furman 2-1 in exhibition men's soccer action Saturday evening at HPU's Vert Stadium.
Lugo struck for a pair of goals in the opening 30-minute period to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. The HPU newcomer and University of North Carolina transfer was assisted by Brendan Krueger and Chris Niblock.
Furman pulled a goal back in the final period when
Miguel Sosa assisted on sophomore
Wilfer Bustamante's score.
"It was good to see us early against a good, well coached High Point team," said Paladin head coach
Doug Allison. "We were able to get the momentum in the latter stages and had a very nice move for Wilfer to score before almost tying the game up twice in the last 30 seconds. The whole squad saw playing time. We certainly have a lot of work to do the remainder of preseason."
"I also wanted to thank the class coaching staff and players from High Point for their kind words at the end of the game," said Allison, who is set to retire at the end of the 2025 season.
The Paladins conclude their preseason schedule on Saturday, August 16, with a 6 p.m. contest versus Lees-McRae at Stone Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
