INDEPENDENCE, MINN. -- Furman's Zach Frazer (+1) tied for 21st to pace the Paladins in the opening day of the Gopher Invitational Sunday at the par 71, 7,464 yard Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn., while freshman Cameron Reed (-7) placed third at the Minnesota Golf Classic at the par 72, 6,953 yard Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Maple Plain, Minn.
A senior from Coppell, Texas, Frazer posted a 72 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 18 in the opening round then shot an even 71 with birdies on No. 9 and No. 12 in the day's second round. He sits seven shots back of Aaron Pounds (-6) of Texas A&M and Frankie Harris (-6) of South Carolina, who each tallied a two-round total of 136 to lead the tournament.
Senior Clark Akers (+2) fired a 69 in the second round to card the Paladins' low round of the day. He recorded a team-high six birdies in the round, including three-straight birdies from No. 16 through No. 18, after opening the tournament with a team-high four birdies in round one. Akers posted a 75 in round one and sits in a tie for 26th entering Monday's final round.
Senior Harris Barth (+7) and freshman Ludvig Josefsson (+7) are tied for 58th after two rounds. The duo each recorded a 74 in round one and a 75 in round two. Josefsson scored three birdies in the first round and added a birdie on No. 4 in the second round, while Barth had consecutive birdies twice in the second round -- first on No. 13 and No. 14 then again on No. 3 and No. 4 after making the turn.
Redshirt sophomore Walter Anderson (+14) birdied No. 12 in round one and No. 9 in round two. After scoring an 80 in round one, he rebounded with a 76 in the afternoon round to tie for 76th.
West Virginia (-5) leads the tournament by four strokes over Texas A&M (-1). South Carolina (+2), Louisville (+3), and Miami (OH) (+4) round out the top five. The Paladins (+17) are in 14th place in the loaded field, which includes several Big 10 teams.
At the Minnesota Golf Classic, rookies Reed and Benton Manley (+2), along with sophomore David Oliver IV (+16) competed as individuals. Reed finished at 7-under par after posting rounds of 72-66-71=209. In round two, he teed off on No. 6 and birdied six of eight holes from No. 12 through No. 1 to finish the round with eight birdies. Manly (+2) tied for 14th after carding an opening-round 68 with seven birdies, and Oliver (+16) notched an even 72 with birdies on three of his last four holes in round one to tie for 70th.
Furman will tee off of No. 10 beginning at 9:20 a.m. ET on Monday in the final round of the 54-hole tournament. The Paladins will play in a group with St. Thomas, Northern Illinois, and individuals.
