COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Sophomores Elle Warren and Lillie Murphy reached the doubles semifinals to lead Furman, as the Paladins concluded play Monday at the ITA Carolinas Regional Championships at the Carolina Outdoor Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C. The tournament showcased the top women's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Warren and Murphy, who competed in last year's doubles national championship, reeled off four consecutive victories to advance to the semifinals. The Paladin duo beat Saige Severance and Marra Bruce of College of Charleston, 8-2, then topped Davidson's Keri Rothenberg and Lilly Dwyer, 8-1. In the round of 16, Warren and Murphy posted an 8-3 advantage over South Carolina's Francie Pate and Jana Stojanova, then the Furman team came from behind to take down Cornelia Kack and Iga Piotrowska of Elon, 8-7(5).
Also in doubles, senior Macy Hitchcock and sophomore Molly Robinson beat Paula Dougherty and Sophia Kovacheva of College of Charleston, 8-2, then downed Lillian Santos and Kady Tannenbaum of Wake Forest, 8-5.
In the main singles draw, Murphy advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Western Carolina's Mariya Dobreva, 6-1, 6-1, and Maddy Zampardo of North Carolina, 6-2, 6-1. Warren reached the semifinals in the main singles consolation draw. She notched victories over Sophia Cadeno of UNCG, 6-2, 6-3, and N.C. State's Jasmine Conway, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8, before advancing past Carlota Farres Carreter of Charleston Southern, by default.
Sophomore Biana Ceroni won her opening match in the qualifying singles draw with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Olivia Bull of College of Charleston. In the qualifying singles consolation draw, sophomore Sasha Dimitrov beat Marra Bruce of College of Charleston, 6-3, 6-1, and Hitchcock defeated Appalachian State's Ruby Broadbent, 6-3, 6-4. Robinson led 3-0 in the first set when Elon's Lisa Kranec retired.
Furman will compete at the Georgia Southern Fall Shootout, Oct. 23-25, in Statesboro, Ga.
