DALLAS, Texas – Redshirt junior Walter Anderson (-3) fired a 69 and is tied for sixth to lead Furman (+1) after Sunday's opening day at SMU's Trinity Forest Invitational at the par 76, 7617 yard Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., Anderson birdied his first hole then notched consecutive birdies on No. 5 and No. 6. He made the turn with back to back birdies on No. 9 and No. 10 then added two additional birdies on the back to finish the day at 3-under par with a team-high seven birdies. Anderson sits five strokes behind individual leader Deitrek Gill (-8) of Southern Cal, who shot a 64 on Sunday.
Junior Ludvig Josefsson (E) shot even par with birdies on No. 5 and No. 16 to tie for 31st, while junior David Oliver IV (+1) carded a 73 with four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 1 and No. 2, tying for 40th.
Graduate student Ben Loomis (+3) and freshman Tucker Gutierrez (+3) are tied for 65th after each recorded a 75 in round one. Loomis tallied five birdies, including three straight birdies from No. 14 through No. 16, and Gutierrez notched back to back birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 and finished the round with four birdies.
UNLV (-14) leads the tournament by four strokes over Southern Cal (-10). East Tennessee State (-7) sits in third, followed by Rice (-3) in fourth, while Chattanooga (-2) and Baylor (-2) are tied for fifth. The Paladins (+1) are tied for tenth, just three shots out of fifth, with host SMU (+1).
The 54-hole tournament continues Monday at 10 a.m. ET with teams teeing off on No. 1 and No. 10. Furman will start at 9:55 a.m. ET on No. 10 and will play in a group with SMU and individuals.
