GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman swept Belmont, 7-0, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins picked up doubles victories at flights one and two to open the match Freshmen Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren, who rank 34th nationally, defeated Jessica Popiol and Savannah Webster, 6-1, at number one, and freshmen Sasha Dimitrov and Bianca Ceroni beat Emma Grant and Cielo Tapia-Cruz, 6-2, at flight two. The flight three match was unfinished. Â
Furman took all of the singles matches in straight sets. Warren posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Webster at flight one, and Murphy made quick work of Popiol, 6-1, 6-1, at flight two. In the number three contest, Dimitrov topped Tapia-Cruz, 6-1, 6-1, at number four, Ceroni bested Ketevan Jeladze, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Macy Hitchcock defeated Libbie Hamilton, 6-1, 6-1, at flight five, and freshman Molly Robinson entered the lineup at flight six, where she downed Grant, 6-1, 6-0.Â
The 67th-ranked Paladins move to 7-3, while Belmont drops to 1-9 with the loss. Â
Furman will entertain Virginia Tech Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
