GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's cross country team finished fourth and the women turned in a seventh-place finish Friday at the 47th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational at the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course on Chicago's north side.
The Furman men scored 133 points, beating out No. 24 Ole Miss, who finished fifth with 161 points, and 11th-ranked Wisconsin, who placed eighth with 201 points. The Paladins also took down No. 13 Washington, who finished 11th with 257 points.
Senior Chris Knight finished third with a time of 22:48.04 to lead the Paladins on the 8K course. Sophomore Ty Jones placed 13th with a time of 23:08.85, and junior Ryan Smith turned in a time of 23:24.18 to finish 34th. Sophomore Zach Youngblood finished 40th at 23:29.31, followed closely by senior Owen Shifflett in 43rd place at 23:32.75 to round out the Furman scorers.
Senior Trevor Coggin placed 50th with a time of 23:34.96, and freshman Evan Spreitzer was 94th at 24:00.33. Freshman Michael Ferguson crossed the line in 24:41.75 for 127th place.
On the women's side, Furman scored 201 points in a loaded field, which included 20th-ranked Virginia, who won the meet with 71 points, and 24th-ranked Minnesota and 12th-ranked Northwestern, who finished second and third, respectively. The Paladins beat out Power 4 foes Michigan, Arizona, and Wisconsin at the meet.
Sophomore Tessa Walter turned in a time of 19:42.67 on the 6K course, finishing tenth to lead Furman. Sophomore Elly Velasquez placed 20th with a time of 19:54.96, and freshman Georgy Helmers posted a time of 20:06.78 for 33rd place. Junior Nysa Males recorded a 54th-place finish in 20:23.41, and junior Rory Sullivan was 91st at 20:49.95 to complete the slate of Paladin scorers.
Junior Zoie Lamanna placed 94th at 20:51.39, while freshman Olivia Ferraro finished 118th with a time of 21:9.51. Freshman Celia Schulte posted a time of 21:38.43 for 130th place.
Select members of the Furman team will compete at the Tryon Fall XC Festival Friday night beginning at 6 p.m.
