Alpharetta, Ga. -- The Furman
men's golf team will open play in the NCAA Southeast Regional
at the Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Alpharetta,
Ga., when it tees off with the University of Mississippi and
Brigham Young University beginning at 8:50 a.m. on
Thursday.
The Paladins got their first look at the par-70, 7,184-yard
Crabapple Golf Club on Wednesday when they played an 8:30 a.m.
practice round on the 600 acre Tom Fazio designed layout.
"The course is wide open and in great condition," said Furman
head coach Todd Satterfield. " It's a great golf course that
should suit or style of play well. We are looking forward to
getting started tomorrow morning."
The Paladins are the eighth seed in the 13-team regional that
also includes 10 players who advanced to postseason play as
individuals. The top five teams from the regional and the low
individual not a member of those teams will advance to the NCAA
Championship on June 1-6, at The Honors Course in Chattanooga,
Tenn.
Furman will have to contend with a stout field at the NCAA
Southeast Regional that includes top-ranked Oklahoma State,
ninth-ranked Arizona State, 16th-ranked Georgia Tech and
19th-ranked Clemson.. Arkansas, Wake Forest, Mississippi, Brigham
Young, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, South Alabama and Towson
round out the field.
Furman is making its fourth NCAA Regional appearance and first
since claiming the Southern Conference championship and automatic
bid to the postseason in 2004. The Paladins, ranked 51st in the
latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, earned an automatic bid to the
postseason by claiming the SoCon Championship on April 20, at the
Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. Furman also advanced to
the NCAA Championship in 1977 and 1986 prior to the regional
format.
Satterfield's five-player lineup for the regional includes
All-SoCon selection Daniel Bowden, SoCon Individual Medalist Austin
Reeves, All-SoCon pick Garland Ferrell, sophomore Anthony Aloi and
senior Jack Ulrich.
Second round play is set for 8 a.m. on Friday with the final
round scheduled to tee-off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
