Furman Golf Set To Open Play At NCAA Southeast Regional

Alpharetta, Ga. -- The Furman men's golf team will open play in the NCAA Southeast Regional at the Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Alpharetta, Ga., when it tees off with the University of Mississippi and Brigham Young University beginning at 8:50 a.m. on Thursday.

The Paladins got their first look at the par-70, 7,184-yard Crabapple Golf Club on Wednesday when they played an 8:30 a.m. practice round on the 600 acre Tom Fazio designed layout.

"The course is wide open and in great condition," said Furman head coach Todd Satterfield. " It's a great golf course that should suit or style of play well. We are looking forward to getting started tomorrow morning."

The Paladins are the eighth seed in the 13-team regional that also includes 10 players who advanced to postseason play as individuals. The top five teams from the regional and the low individual not a member of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship on June 1-6, at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Furman will have to contend with a stout field at the NCAA Southeast Regional that includes top-ranked Oklahoma State, ninth-ranked Arizona State, 16th-ranked Georgia Tech and 19th-ranked Clemson.. Arkansas, Wake Forest, Mississippi, Brigham Young, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, South Alabama and Towson round out the field.

Furman is making its fourth NCAA Regional appearance and first since claiming the Southern Conference championship and automatic bid to the postseason in 2004. The Paladins, ranked 51st in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, earned an automatic bid to the postseason by claiming the SoCon Championship on April 20, at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. Furman also advanced to the NCAA Championship in 1977 and 1986 prior to the regional format.

Satterfield's five-player lineup for the regional includes All-SoCon selection Daniel Bowden, SoCon Individual Medalist Austin Reeves, All-SoCon pick Garland Ferrell, sophomore Anthony Aloi and senior Jack Ulrich.

Second round play is set for 8 a.m. on Friday with the final round scheduled to tee-off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
