Box Score Elon, N.C. – Drew Spradlin scored 12 of his team-high 20 points in the second half and Elon used a late 12-1 run to pull away from Furman, 77-70, in the Southern Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday evening at Alumni Gym.
The loss dropped Furman to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in league play while Elon improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the SoCon.
After trimming the Elon lead to just 58-57 with 7:49 remaining, Furman missed its next 12 shots from the floor and the Phoenix fashioned a 12-1 spurt to extend their lead to 70-58 before Brandon Sebirumbi ended the six-minute scoring drought with a layup with 1:42 to play. The Paladins were forced to foul in the final two minutes and trimmed the margin back to five at 75-70, but Jack Isenbarger and Lucas Troutman each drained a free throw in the final 30 seconds to hold off a potential Furman rally.
Spradlin hit 8-of-13 shots from the field to lead three Phoenix in double figures as Isenbarger added 13 points and Austin Hamilton contributed 11. Elon, who shot 46% from the floor, committed just eight turnovers and outscored the Paladins 19-9 at the foul line to improve to 8-4 all-time versus Furman.
The Paladins, led by Charlie Reddick's career-high 22 points, held a 24-19 advantage just past the midway point of the first half before Elon used a 19-8 run to carry a 38-32 lead into intermission. The Phoenix built an eight-point lead in the second half before Reddick buried two of his game-high six treys to pull Furman within a point with under eight minutes left.
Furman connected on just 14-of-40 second half shots to finish at 39.4% from the field, including 9-of-26 beyond the arc. Reddick, 8-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-10 from three-point range, added seven rebounds while Sebirumbi posted 11 points and eight boards. Freshman Dominic Early added a career-best nine points for the Paladins who out-rebounded Elon 38-37.
