Furman Falls At Appalachian State, 68-58

BOONE, N.C. -- Anna Freeman poured in 24 points and paced a solid second half rally that carried Appalachian State past Furman, 68-58, in Southern Conference women's basketball play Monday evening at Holmes Convocation Center.

Freeman drained 9-of-15 shots and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line to go along with a game 12 rebounds to pace the Mountaineers (15-6, 9-4 SoCon).

Freshman Holli Wilkins led a contingent of four double figure scorers for the Paladins (10-13, 6-8 SoCon), tallying 12 points.  Kaitlin Murphy, Teshia Griswold, and Brigid Morrissey registered 10 points apiece for Furman, which entered the contest having won its last two and four of its last five games.

Maryah Sydnor followed Freeman with 19 points and Kelsey Sharkey contributed 10 points for ASU.

The Paladins led for much of the first half until the Mountaineers used a 6-0 run over the final two minutes of the opening period to a take a 30-28 lead into intermission.

A Wilkins jump shot two minutes into the second half spotted Furman a 35-32 lead, but Appalachian State responded with a 10-0 burst over the next three minutes to take control, capped by a Sydnor layup at the 15:10 mark for a 42-35 advantage.

The Mountainneers stretched their led to 47-37 on another Sydnor basket at the 13:52 mark.

Brigid Morrissey drained a pair of free throws with 5:09 to go to pull the Paladins to within six at 55-49, but an 8-0 spurt, keyed by three Freeman baskets, secured the decision for ASU.

The Mountaineers' solid second half was keyed by 50.0 percent shooting from the field (14x28).  ASU finished the contest at 42.1 percent (24x57).

Furman connected on 44.8 percent of its field goal attempts (13x29) in the first half but was hurt by turnovers, committing 14 of its 21 miscues in the opening frame.

ASU posted a 42-33 rebounding advantage and outscored Furman by 12 points at the free throw line, converting 19-of-25 chances to the Paladins 7-of-8.  The Mountaineers also made their 11 offensive rebounds count as they led to a 12-3 scoring differential on second chance opportunities.

Furman continues its four-game road stretch on Saturday at Davidson.  Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
