USC Upstate Takes Two From Furman Softball 7-1, 11-3

Greenville, S.C. -- USC Upstate's Alicia Dorgan homered in both games and drove in a combined six runs to power the Spartans to a 7-1, 11-3 doubleheader sweep of Furman in non-conference softball action Wednesday evening at Pepsi Stadium.

Game 1: USC Upstate 7, Furman 1
Christina Biggerstaff (25-4) held Furman to a run on three hits and fanned 13 batters to lead the Spartans to a 7-1 victory over the Paladins in game one.

Upstate pounded out 13 hits and swiped eight bases in the opener, including four hits and three steals in a the first inning to plate two runs. The Spartans used three more hits and stole two more bases in a two-run third inning before adding two runs on three hits in the fifth.

Four different players collected two hits apiece for the Spartans while Dorgan cracked a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Marissa Guimbarda tallied the Paladins lone run with her league-leading 14th home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior Emily DeMonte (9-15) suffered the loss for the Paladins allowing seven runs on 13 hits in seven innings. She struck out three batters and walked one.

Game 2: USC Upstate 11, Furman 3 (5 innings)
In the nightcap, USC Upstate took advantage of nine walks and a hit batter to score 11 runs on just seven hits to down Furman, 11-3, in five innings.

The Spartans grabbed a 2-0 lead after half an inning and plated five in the top of the third, highlighted by Dorgan's three-run blast to left field. Furman loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and Guimbarda got the Paladins on the board with a walk to force in a run. Tess Griswold singled to drive in a run and Morgan Smith cut the lead to 7-3 with an RBI grounder to shortstop.

USC Upstate, however, answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to put the game out of reach. Dorgan went 2-for-2 with five RBI and Megan Obier finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Erin Hill (14-9) earned the win by holding Furman to three runs on four hits over three innings. Mackense Greico (2-12) took the loss after allowing seven runs on three hits in three innings.

Cammy Pereira and Lauren Duggar collected two hits apiece for the Paladins.

Furman (11-32, 3-8 SoCon) returns to league play on Saturday when it opens a three-game SoCon series at Western Carolina with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
