Box Score 2 Fort Myers, Fla. – Furman dropped a pair of games on the final day of the FGCU Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla., falling 8-1 to 24
th-ranked Arkansas and 8-3 to Memphis.
No. 24 Arkansas 8, Furman 1
Arkansas' Jenna Bloom and Mary Haff combined to fan 10 batters and the Razorbacks belted three home runs to down Furman, 8-1, in the opening game on Saturday morning.
Bloom (1-0) allowed just one hit over four shutout innings and struck out six Paladins to pick up the victory, while Hall surrendered just one run on two hits over three innings to earn her first save of the season.
After Furman loaded the bases in the first inning and stranded five runners over the first two frames without scoring, Arkansas grabbed the lead on Danielle Gibson's RBI single in the top of the third inning. Linnie Malkin hammered a three-run homer to key a four-run top of the fifth for the Razor backs and Braxton Burnside and Audrie Lavalley also went deep to stake Arkansas to an 8-0 lead.
Carolina Nageotte reached on a seventh inning single and scored on
Natalie Morgan's two-out base hit, Haff Haff retired the Paladins to end the rally.
Morgan Smith (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on 11 hits in five innings of work. She walked three and struck out three.
Burnside went 4-for-5 and scored two runs to lead Arkansas' 14-hit attack.
Memphis, 8, Furman 3
The Memphis Tigers plated eight runs on 12 hits and fanned 15 Furman batters en route to an 8-3 victory over the Paladins on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Invitational.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Memphis put two runners on base before Kendall Lee delivered with a go-ahead single and Sam Ibison laced a two-run single to put the Tigers in front 6-3. A pair of errors on the Furman infield led to two more runs in the sixth for the final 8-3 margin.
Down 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning, Nageotte was hit by a pitch and Smith laced a double down the line to set the table for the Paladins. After a pair of strikeouts and a walk, Nageotte scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, but Memphis' Chyanne Ellet entered to retire the side and strand the bases loaded.
Ellett (4-1) went on to toss three and one-third innings without allowing a hit. She walked just one batter and fanned six to earn the win. Furman starter
Bailey Tanner (0-4) took the loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits in five innings.
Freshman
Riley Ludlam led the Furman offense with two hits. Brady Rowland and Bailey Smith each collected three hits apiece for the Tigers, who finished with 12 hits and six stolen bases.
Furman (1-7) returns to action next weekend at the Eagle Round Robin in Statesboro, Ga. The Paladins are slated to face Maryland, Evansville, Monmouth and host Georgia Southern.
