CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte slipped past Furman, 4-3, Sunday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex in Charlotte, N.C.
The 49ers won the doubles point to open the match. Benjamin Wayand and Henry Lieberman topped 26th-ranked seniors Jake Munns and Jake Bhangdia, 6-1, at flight one, and Ignasi de Rueda and Collin Thomson teamed up to beat junior Drew Singerman and sophomore James Roelofse, 6-4, at flight three. The flight two match was unfinished, with Furman senior Clarke Wilson and junior Henrik Atlevi leading Constandinos Christoforou and Leonardo Menezes, 5-3.
Just after singles play began, inclement weather in the area forced the teams to move indoors. Charlotte's Menezes recorded a 6-2, 6-4 advantage over Singerman at flight four, giving the 49ers a 2-0 lead, but Wilson answered for the Paladins with a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory versus Wayand at number two. Liberman held off Munns, 7-5, 7-6(4) in a tight flight one contest to push the lead to 3-1, then Bhangdia kept the Paladins in the match by defeating Christoforou, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at number three. At flight five, de Rueda clinched the match for Charlotte, topping Roelofse, 6-3, 6-4, before Atlevi beat Cole Brainard, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(10-5), at flight six in the final contest of the day.
Furman (5-4, 1-0 SoCon) will entertain Richmond Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
