ELON, N.C. -- With the score knotted at 3-all, Nicholas Campbell came from behind for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over freshman Emil Westling at flight five singles to lead Elon past Furman, 4-3, Friday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
The Phoenix (7-1) swept the doubles matches to claim the first point. Akram El Sallaly and Chung-Han Tsai defeated seniors Jake Bhangdia and Henrik Atlevi, 6-2, at flight one, and Kyle Frankel and Nicholas Condos recorded a 6-3 advantage over junior James Roelofse and senior Ivan Mitric at number two. Camilo Ponce and Nicholas Campbell outlasted Westling and senior Drew Singerman, 7-6(1), at flight three.
Roelofse put the Paladins on the board quickly in singles action, defeating Jacob Bicknell, 6-3, 6-2, at flight six. Bhangdia gave Furman a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Condos at flight two, but Ponce topped Singerman, 6-0, 6-4, at number four to tie the score at 2-all. The Phoenix went ahead when Frankel scored a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Mitric in the top-seeded contest, then Atlevi battled back to defeat El Sallaly, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, at number five to tie the match and set up the decisive flight six match up.Â
Furman (4-5, 1-0 SoCon) continues its road swing at Stetson on March 12. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
