Greenville, S.C. – Furman placed 87 student-athletes on the Academic All-Southern Conference Team, it was announced today by the league office.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the semester of competition and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
With 12 honorees, Furman's men's outdoor track & field topped the Paladin contingent, followed by football and women's soccer with nine each, and men's indoor track & field had eight.
"Furman Athletics is so proud of the academic achievements of our student-athletes," said Athletics Director
Jason Donnelly. "Being named to the Academic All-Southern Conference Team is a significant accomplishment that represents the hard work, talent and commitment to excellence by our students, faculty and staff. Congratulations to our 87 deserving recipients."
This is the first year in which the SoCon has administered fall and spring sports together, which came as a result of the majority of competition taking place in the spring.
The 1,023 total selections to the Academic All-Southern Conference Team are the second-most for an academic year since the league started administering the award in 2002-03. Only last year's total of 1,093 selections eclipses this season's total, although some league schools instituted measures of academic relief in spring 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and participation requirements were relaxed as a result of the cancelation of spring seasons.
The 57 GPA's of 4.0 are a new league record, surpassing the combined 53 from the 2017-18 fall and spring teams.
