Furman To Honor Seniors At Saturday's Season Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team will open the 2022 season Saturday with a doubleheader versus VCU and Emmanuel at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.  The Paladins will take on the Rams at 10 a.m. and the Lions at 3:30 p.m.  Between the two matches, Furman will honor seniors Julia Adams, Eva Borders, and Mary Hunter Hyche as they begin their final season with the Paladins.

Due to the increase of COVID-19 transmission and infections, everyone attending an indoor athletic event at Furman is required to mask. Masks are required upon entry and must be worn within the facility, except when eating or drinking.

"We are excited to kick off the season at home tomorrow with two great matches," said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen, who is in his seventh season with the Paladins.  "I have been impressed by the work that our team has put in during the preseason, and we are excited to get to compete as a team for the first time this year and to honor our seniors."

Saturday's matches mark the season opener for all three teams.  Furman defeated VCU, 3-0, last year in Richmond, Va., to take a 2-1 series advantage.  The Paladins last faced Emmanuel in 2020, when Furman posted a 7-0 victory in Greenville.  Furman leads the all-time series, 3-0.

The Paladins rewrote the record books during the spring of 2021, as Furman put together a 21-7 overall record and 7-0 SoCon mark with victories over Alabama, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 18 South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Clemson.  Furman rose as high as 23rd in the ITA national rankings, marking the highest ranking in program history.  The Paladins, who won the SoCon regular season championship, claimed their fourth-consecutive and 20th overall tournament championship and made their fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Champ

Furman's Adams is currently ranked 45th nationally in singles, while freshman Sara Snyder is rated 65th, according to the latest ITA Division I National Rankings, which were released last month.
