GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman topped Georgia Southern, 5-2, Sunday in the Paladins home opener at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to claim the first point. Laurent Julia Calac and Dimitris Paliouras defeated freshmen Cole Burnam and Connor Laymon, 6-1, at flight three, then senior Ivan Mitric and freshman Jamie Connel evened the slate with a 7-5 victory over Tao Castillo and Pol Del Castillo at number one. In the decisive flight two contest, sophomore Emil Westling and junior James Roelofse downed Alexandros Roumpis and Valentin Dun, 6-4.
Furman scored four singles points for the team victory. The top three singles matches went to a third set, with the Paladins winning at flights one and two. Mitric came from behind to beat Pol del Castillo, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1, at number one, and Connel held off Roumpis, 4-6, 2-6, 6-4, at flight two. At flight four, Roelofse slipped past Paliouras, 7-5, 7-6, and at number five, Westling blew past Dun, 6-0, 6-2.
The Eagles scored at flights three and six singles. Tao Castillo recorded a 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 advantage over freshman Elijah Poritzky at flight three, and Julia Calac came from behind for a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(10-8) victory over senior Drew Singerman at number six.
Furman (1-1) will entertain North Greenville and Emmanuel in a double header at the Mickel Tennis Center next Saturday. First serve versus the Crusaders is set for 10 a.m. with the match up versus the Lions scheduled for 3 pm.
