LEXINGTON, VA. -- Furman won three titles and broke two meet records Sunday in the final day of competition at the 2022 SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championship, which were held this weekend at the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Va.
Sophomore Megan Marvin won the women's 800m for the second-consecutive season, posting a time of 2:05.68 to establish a new Furman record and meet record. Marvin set the old program record of 2:06.61 earlier this season, while the former meet record of 2:06.10 was set Karisa Nelson of Samford in 2019. Freshman Callie Harper finished sixth in the event at 2:18.62.
Junior Cameron Ponder won his third-straight title in the mile, running a sub-4:00 mile for the fourth time in his career and breaking the meet record with a time of 3:59.75. Ponder, who gave the Paladins six-straight gold medals in the event, broke his own record of 4:02.62, which he set last season. Senior Aaron Wier finished second with a time of 4:04.98, and junior Mac Roberts scored in eighth place at 4:12.98. Freshman Foster Wilfong turned in a time of 4:15.48 for tenth, while junior Josh Powers finished 11th at 4:16.44.
Sophomore Madelynne Cadeau fought down the stretch to win the 5,000m Sunday for the second-straight year. Cadeau, who won the 3,000m for the second year in a row on Saturday, paced the field with a time of 16:43.03. The Paladins, who claimed the 5,000m title for the eighth-straight year, had four runners among the top five in the event. Sophomore Emily Little finished third with a time of 16:47.81, followed by sophomore Bethany Graham in fourth at 16:55.07. Freshman Sierra Bower was fifth at 17:10.34. Sophomore Kylie Wittman turned in a tenth-place finish at 17:54.81, and junior Nicole Matysik, who won the first heat, was 11th overall with a time of 17:54.86.
Graham led the Paladins in the women's mile, turning in a time of 4:52.68 for second place. Freshman Meghan Ford was fourth at 4:57.07, and Matysik finished sixth with a time of 5:07.23. Sophomore Beth Donnelly rounded out the Furman runners in ninth place with a time of 5:24.17.
In the men's 5,000m, Furman took four of the top five spots, with sophomore Dylan Schubert leading the Paladin contingency with a time of 14:10.92 for second place. Sophomore Carson Williams was third at 14:22.30, followed by senior Noah Dolhare in fourth at 14:23.69. Junior Adam Beucler turned in a time of 14:29.82 for fifth place, and freshman Nick Goldstein finished 19th with a time of 15:38.07.
Junior Jonah Dill placed fifth with a time of 8.50 in the men's 60m hurdles, and junior Evin McEntee recorded a mark of 13.63 to claim seventh place in the men's triple jump.
The Paladins placed five rookies on the SoCon All-Freshman Team: Foster Wilfong (men's mile), Nick Goldstein (men's 5,000m), Meghan Ford (women's mile), Callie Harper (women's 800m), and Sierra Bower (women's 5,000m).
Samford won both the women's and men's meets for the third-consecutive year. The Bulldogs totalled 161.5 points on the women's side, followed by ETSU in second with 146.5 points. Samford tallied 206.5 points in the women's meet, while Western Carolina took second place with 117 points.
The Paladins men scored 84 points to finish fourth, while the Furman women tallied 92 points for fifth place.
Qualifying members of the Furman team will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
