BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- The Furman women won every distance event from the 800m to the 10,000m for the first time in program history at the 2022 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which were held Saturday and Sunday at Samford's Shauna Yelton Field in Birmingham, Ala.

A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., sophomore Megan Marvin won both the women's 800m and 1,500m on Sunday.  She posted a time of 2:07.66 in the 800m, breaking the former facility record by almost a full second and claiming her second-consecutive SoCon title in the event.  In the 1,500m, she led a Paladin 1-2 punch, crossing the line in 4:20.44 to finish just ahead of teammate Madelynne Cadeau, a redshirt freshman who finished second at 4:22.20.  Sophomore Bethany Graham was fourth in the event at 4:26.43, followed by junior Abigail Robertson, who finished fifth with a time of 4:28.72.

Furman swept the top three positions in the women's 5,000m.  Sophomore Bethany Graham took the title in 17:05.04, followed by sophomore Emily Little, who won the 10,000m on Saturday, in second place with a time of 17:10.59, and Cadeau came in third with a time of 17:25.89.  Junior Nicole Matysik captured the Paladins' first 3,000m Steeplechase title 3:34.47 and finished sixth in the 5,000m at 17:45.69, while sophomore Kylie Wittman was 13th at 18:50.43 in the 5,000m.

The Paladin men also took the top three spots in the 5,000m Sunday, led by freshman Gabe Montague, who turned in a time of 15:18.40.  Sophomore Dylan Schubert was overtaken by Montague at the last second to place second at 15:19.06, and sophomore Carson Williams took third with a time of 15:19.21.  Senior Noah Dolhare claimed tenth at 15:26.72, and freshmen Nick Goldstein and Foster Wilfong, finished 14th (15:46.31) and 15th (15:47.14), respectively.

Freshman Matthew Smith took gold in the men's 800m, establishing a new facility record of 1:48.37 and breaking former Paladin Phil Barker's SoCon record of 1:49.20, which had stood since 1977.  

Sophomore Carson Williams took silver in the men's 1,500m, recording a time of 3:45.89.  Senior Aaron Wier was fourth in the event at 3:47.48, while Smith finished seventh at 3:50.88.  Freshman Gabe Montague turned in an eight-place finish with a time of 3:52.45, and junior Mac Roberts was ninth at 3:55.20.

In the hurdle events in day two, junior Jonah Dill turned in a fourth-place finish in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 15.17 and placed seventh in the 400m hurdles at 57.66, while junior Caroline Nguyen finished eighth with a time of 1:09.80 in the women's 400m hurdles.  In the field events, junior Evin McEntee tallied a mark of 13.36m for ninth place in the triple jump.

Smith was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team for the 800m and 1,500m, while Montague earned a spot on the team for his performance in both the 1,500m and the 5,000m.  Goldstein and Wilfong were also named to the team for the 5,000m.  On the women's side, Armitage earned an all-freshman team citation in the 1,500m, while Monica Seitz claimed the honor in the 400m.  Callie Harper represented the Paladins on the team for her performance in the 800m.  Cadeau was honored for her performances in the 1,500m and 5,000m.

The Paladin men finished fourth with 95 points, while the Paladin women placed fifth with 94 points, Furman's highest point total on the women's side since 2018.  Samford claimed both team titles, scoring 226 points on the men's side and 224 in the women's competition.

Select members of the Paladin squad will compete at the Lee Twilight meet in Cleveland, Tenn., on May 13.
