GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team recorded four victories Saturday in the second day of the 35th annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic, which is being held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins scored three singles victories in round two of the tournament. Sophomore Marissa Pennings held on for a 6-4, 7-6(6) victory over Marcella Cruz of Vanderbilt, and sophomore Ellie Schulson topped Wake Forest's Stella Li, 6-1, 7-5, both at flight six. In flight seven, sophomore Sara Snyder defeated Georgia Tech's Rosie Garcia Gross, 6-1, 6-3.
In the final round of doubles, Schulson and Griffin recorded an 8-6 victory over Madelyn Bemisderfer and McKee of Mississippi State at flight four.
Eight of the ten teams competing in the tournament were ranked in the top 39 in the 2022 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings: North Carolina (3), Duke (4), Ohio State (15), Wake Forest (23), Vanderbilt (27), South Carolina (28), Georgia Tech (32), and Furman (39). Clemson concluded last season ranked 63rd, while Mississippi State was 68th.
The tournament will conclude with one round of singles on Sunday starting at 9 a.m.
