CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Furman remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play with a 5-2 win at Western Carolina Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C.
The Paladins (7-10, 3-0 SoCon) won all three doubles matches to score the first point. Junior Ellie Schulson and freshman Macy Hitchcock defeated Isabella Sambola and Angela Perez, 6-1, at flight one, and juniors Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder teamed up to beat Jade Groen and Madison Schwarz, 6-3, at flight two. Furman won by default at number three.
Furman scored four points in singles. Junior Grace Thomas topped Perez, 6-4, 6-3, at number three, and Hitchcock held off Schwarz, 6-4, 7-5, at number four. At flight five, Dawson posted a 6-3, 6-1 advantage over Dasha Osadova. Junior Marissa Pennings won by default at flight six.
The Catamounts (8-11, 0-4 SoCon) scored at flights one and two singles. Sambola defeated freshman Maeve Thornton, 6-2, 7-5, in the top-seeded contest, and Groen edged out Schulson, 7-6(6), 6-3, at number two.
Furman will play at UNC Greensboro Thursday at 1 p.m. then returns to the Mickel Tennis Center for the team's home finale on Saturday. First serve versus Chattanooga is set for 1 p.m.
