MADISON, Wis. -- The Furman cross country teams placed 26th Friday at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis.
The Furman women scored 642 points in the 6K race, which featured 15 top-25 teams, to open the day. Second-ranked N.C. State won the meet with 41 points, followed by No. 7 Notre Dame in second place with 125 points. No. 16 Iowa State placed third with 176 points.
Freshman Tessa Walter led the Paladins with a time of 20:28.4 to finish 32nd. Sophomore Nysa Males turned in a time of 21:34.3 for 144th place, and sophomore Zoie Lamanna was 152nd with a time of 21:41.6. Freshman Annie Miller placed just behind Lamanna in 153rd at 21:41.8, and freshman Elly Velasquez finished 172nd at 21:56.3 to complete the Furman scoring. Sophomore Jais Ward posted a time of 21:59.4 for 176th, sophomore Rory Sullivan was 180th at 22:02.8, and senior Emma Jones finished 208th with a time of 22:44.4.
The Paladin men scored 592 points in the 8K race, with also featured 15 top-25 teams. No. 3 New Mexico scored 51 points for the victory, followed by fifth-ranked Colorado in second place with 150 points. No. 11 Syracuse scored 152 points to finish third.
Graduate student Albert Velikonja posted a time of 23:52.1 to lead Furman and take 37th place. Junior Chris Knight placed 90th at 24:22.9, and sophomore Rives Boltwood crossed the line in 24:47.8 for 139th place. Sophomore Colin Eckerman finished 167th with a time of 25:08.4, and sophomore Matteo Tonnos was 175th with a time of 25:13.7 to finish out the Paladin scorers. Graduate student Bryn Woodall recorded a time of 25:16.2 for 180th place, and junior Owen Shifflett finished 227th with a time of 27:37.0.
The Paladins will defend their SoCon titles at the league championship on Nov. 1 at the Tryon Equestrian Center in Tryon, N.C.
