Rachel Hawkins delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Furman to a 4-3 victory over Harvard and Saturday split at the Bash in the Boro at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga. Lipscomb edged the Paladins, 1-0, in the opening game of the day.
Furman 4, Harvard 3
With two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, three straight freshman came through at the plate as Furman handed Harvard its first loss of the season in walk-off fashion.
Logan Gunter started the two-out rally with a walk and moved into scoring position on
Katie Peeler's single up the middle. Hawkins followed by lining a double the opposite way to score Gunter from second base as the Paladins claimed the 4-3 victory.
Senior
Lauralee Scott (1-0), who entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, surrendered just two runs on six hits over 6.2 innings in the circle to pick up her first victory of the season. The Greenwood, S.C., native issued two walks and struck out five in the long relief effort.
After the Crimson and Paladins traded runs in the first inning, Furman grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on the first of two sacrifice flies from freshman
Madison Petty. Harvard evened the contest with a run in the top of the fourth before Petty's second sacrifice fly plated
Caitlin Goldwait with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
Down to their final strike, Harvard got back-to-back singles from Sophie Sun and Maya Douglas to push across the tying run in the top of the seventh.
Reliever Olivia Torres (0-1) absorbed the loss in the circle for Harvard after allowing one run over 1.2 innings of work. Sun went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Crimson while Douglas finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Goldwait collected three hits and scored a pair of runs for the Paladins while Petty posted two RBIs and Gunter added two hits.
Sylvia Burroughs reached base three times with a double and two walks.
Lipscomb 1, Furman 0
Alyssa Hastings lined a two-out, two-strike double into the right-center field gap to plate Mallory Ogle in the bottom of the seventh as Lipscomb edged Furman, 1-0, in a pitcher's duel in the opening game of the day at the Bash in the Boro.
Ryleigh Sapp (1-1) was the standout performer for the Bisons as she scattered three hits and fanned nine batters in a complete-game effort. Josey Polk and Ogle each collected two hits for the Bisons, who improved to 3-5 on the season.
Angelina Ricciardi (1-2) suffered the loss despite limiting Lipscomb to just one run on six hits over 6.2 innings of work. The sophomore right-hander walked two batters and struck out three.
Burroughs continued her white-hot start to the season by going 2-for-3 at the plate for the Paladins.
