Greenville, S.C. – Taylor Ames-Alexander went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples and Destiny Calloway tossed a complete game to power South Carolina State to an 8-4 victory over Furman on opening night for both teams Thursday in the Paladin Invitational at Pepsi Stadium.
Ames-Alexander delivered a go-ahead, RBI triple in the first inning and tripled off the glove of the centerfielder to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning. Makayla Chisolm put the Bulldogs in front with a two-run single in the top of the fourth and South Carolina State up the margin to 6-2 the following inning when Kaylah Leslie doubled in a run and scored on a throwing error after swiping third base.
After back-to-back RBI singles from Leslie and Ames-Alexander in the top of the seventh, Furman tried to mount a two-out rally in its last at bat when
Madison Petty delivered a pinch hit single to score two runs, but Calloway limited the damage to end the game. Calloway allowed just two earned runs on seven hits over seven innings to earn the victory.
Leslie went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Bulldogs while leadoff hitter Jamaria Charley walked three times and scored four runs.
Starter
Emme Buzhardt absorbed the loss for Furman after allowing four runs on four hits over 3.1 innings of work.
Sylvia Burroughs went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to pace the Paladins at the plate.
The Paladins are back in action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they host the UT Martin Skyhawks in the final game of the day at the Paladin Invitational.
