BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Furman men's team won three events Tuesday to place third in the 2025 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Shauna Yelton Field at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
With Tuesday's victories, the Paladin men won every event from the 800m to the 10,000m, including the 3,000m Steeplechase, for the first time since 2021. Furman scored 100 points at the meet, the team's highest total since scoring 122 points in 2021.Â
Senior Dylan Schubert set a SoCon meet record with a time of 14:11.06 in the 5,000m, breaking the former record of 14:13.06, which was set by ETSU's Adrian Leek in 1981. Junior Luke Taylor finished third with a time of 14:25.78, followed by sophomore Owen Shifflett in fourth at 14:30.20. Freshman Rives Boltwood finished fifth with a personal-best time of 14:30.31, and senior Casey Burr was seventh at 14:45.36. Senior Nick Goldstein finished eighth at 14:51.08. Â
The Paladins also won the men's 800m and 1,500m. Senior Matthew Smith took gold in the 800m with a time of 1:48.53, and sophomore Chris Knight led all runners with a time of 3:45.68 in the 1,500m. Freshman Tripp Roemer placed third in the 1,500m at 3:43.04, followed by senior Gabe Montague in fourth at 3:53.51. Senior Foster Wilfong placed 11th with a time of 4:14.15.
In the 400m, freshman Joe Womack finished ninth with a time of 50.30.
On the women's side, the 4x400m relay team of freshman Claire Cook, senior Megan Marvin, Delaney Vickers, and freshman Jais Ward set a new Paladin record with a time of 3:51.35, breaking the 26-year-old record of 3:52.43, which was set in 1999.
Furman placed four runners among the top five in the women's 800m. Vickers finished second with a PR of 2:08.88, followed by Marvin in third with a season-best time of 2:09.00. Cook placed fourth with a time of 2:10.51, and Ward took finish with a time of 2:10.88. Â
In the women's 1,500m, all six Paladin runners finished in the top 11. Freshman Nysa Males was second at 4:30.71, followed by senior Nicole Matysik in third at 4:31.21. Freshman Rory Sullivan posted a time of 4:37.20 for seventh place, and freshman Zoie Lamanna took eighth place with a time of 4:37.87. Senior Callie Harper finished ninth at4:38.14, and senior Bethany Graham was 11th at 4:43.04.
Each of the five Furman competitors in the women's 5,000m placed among the top nine. Junior Carly Wilkes placed second with a time of 16:40.43, and junior Emma Jones placed fifth at 17:23.40. Lamanna finished sixth with a time of 17:24.53, and Males was eighth at 17:28.78. Graham turned in a time of 17:29.38 for ninth place. Â
The Paladin women finished fifth with 85 points. Samford claimed both team titles, scoring 215 points on the women's side and 217.5 in the men's competition.
Four Paladin men earned SoCon All-Freshman team citations on Tuesday. Womack was honored in the 400m, Roemer made the team in the 1,500m, and Boltwood received the accolade in the 5,000m. Alexander Friedli was a member of the team in the 800m. For the women, Vickers, Cook, and Ward received citations in the 800m, and Males and Sullivan were honored in the 1,500m. Lamanna and Males were named to the team in the 5,000m.
