GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Coming off an impressive 3-0 win over Georgia, the Furman Paladins open Southern Conference play Friday at Davidson with a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Wildcats at Wilson Field. Saturday's game is set for 2:00 p.m. and first pitch for Sunday's series finale is 1:00 p.m.
Furman (5-5) is expected to throw junior RHP Bobby Lyne (0-0, 2.70 ERA) in Friday's opener, followed by sophomore LHP Nate Smith (0-2, 8.22 ERA) on Saturday and freshman RHP Tyler Wood (1-0, 2.70 ERA) on Sunday.
Live stats for all three games will be available through www.furmanpaladins.com
Furman's blanking of Georgia on Wednesday, the first by the Paladins over the Bulldogs since 1948, halted a five-game losing streak. Junior left-hander Daniel Stallsmith pitched 5 2/3 innings of three-hit ball and combined with relievers Drake Browne, Matt Plate, and Dylan Cole to limit Georgia to just four total hits while getting four double plays turned behind them.
The Paladins opened the season with a four-game sweep of Ohio, but then dropped successive games to Charleston Southern (5-3), Georgia (6-4), Michigan State (7-3), Cincinnati (9-8), and defending national champion South Carolina (14-1) before beating Georgia.
Davidson (5-6) is coming off a 14-6 loss at North Carolina on Wednesday.
Furman holds a 108-77-1 advantage in the series, which dates to 1904.
The Paladins are placed at the plate by senior first baseman Aaron Thompkins (.415, 0 HR, 7 RBI) and junior right fielder Will Miller (.405, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 6 SBs).
Last year Furman won its final six SoCon games to qualify for league tournament play as the No. 8 seed.
This year's tournament, which will include the top eight finishers in the 11-team SoCon, is set for May 25-28 at Charleston's Riley Park.
