Appalachian State Blanks Furman, 5-0

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Seth Grant pitched a complete game, six-hit shutout to power Appalachian State to a 5-0 victory over Furman in a Southern Conference elimination game Friday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Park.

Appalachian State (33-26) will advance to play Samford in a Saturday 9:00 a.m. contest.

The loss ends the season for Furman (24-33).

Grant (5-9), a redshirt junior, allowed only six singles and one walk while striking out five, to record his second triumph over the Paladins this year.  The right-hander, who needed 115 pitches to complete his shutout, also had three double plays turned behind him in the first four innings.

ASU pounded out 15 hits in the contest, with Will Callaway leading the way with a 3-for-5 performance.  Tyler Zupic, Trey Holmes, Jack Myers, Preston Troutman, and Zack Briggs all contributed two hits apiece, and Hector Crespo drove in a pair of runs.

Appalachian State got to Furman starting pitcher Tyler Wood in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits.  Jeremy Dowdy's RBI single scored Callaway for the game's first run, and Crespo followed with a two-out, two-run triple into the right center field gap.

The Mountaineers padded their advantage in the sixth, combining a hit batsman with three hits to score two runs.  Crespo was hit by a pitch with one out, advanced to third on a single by Zupcic, and scored on Holmes' single through the right side.  Zupcic then scored on Myers' base hit to left field to make it 5-0.

Wood (3-5) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on 12 hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Reese Wade led Furman at the plate, going 2-for-4 in his final game as a Paladin.

Notes:  First baseman Aaron Thompkins finished his Furman career with a .335 batting average, the seventh highest mark in program history.  The Canton, Ohio, product also established a new career fielding record for first basemen, with a mark of .993, eclipsing the previous standard of .986 by Jim Morrill (1995-98).  Pitcher Jay Friedman's 88 career appearances ranks fourth all-time at Furman.  J.B. Jenkins established a new school season fielding standard for shortstops with  a .964 mark this year, committing only 10 errors in 269 total chances.  The previous record was .960 by Connor Lind (2007).  In collecting two hits against Appalachian State today, Reese Wade finished his Paladin career with 201 hits and a .320 batting average.
