Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Ben Arkin went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs to power Davidson to an 11-6 win over Furman in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
The win gave Davidson (20-8, 10-2 SoCon) the three-game series sweep — the Wildcats' first over Furman in Greenville since 1993 and only the second since the SoCon went to three-game series formats in 1984.
The loss was the fifth straight for Furman (11-21, 2-7 SoCon).
Arkin got his big day started early with a three-run double in the first inning against Furman starting pitcher Tyler Wood, helping the Wildcats grab a 4-0 lead.
Furman got a run back in the bottom of the first and made it a 4-3 game in the third on Greg Harrison's two-run home run to left field off Davidson starting pitcher Nick Neitzel.
It remained a one-run game until the fifth when Wood issued back-to-back walks and an RBI single to Ryan Lowe that scored Andrew Pope. Forrest Brandt brought home the inning's second run with a sacrifice fly to put Davidson up 6-3.
The Wildcats tacked on three more in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run home run to center field by Nathan Becker.
The Paladins cut it to 9-4 in the seventh, added two more in the eighth, but then saw a chance at a big inning dashed when pinch hitter Jarrod Rickman's line drive was speared by diving Davidson third baseman David Daniels, who got to his feet and threw to second base to complete an inning ending double play.
Davidson, which finished 13 hits, got a 3-for-4 performance from Becker, who drove in three and scored three. Daniels also had three hits, including a double, and crossed home plate three times.
Furman collected 10 hits, including two each by Alex Abrams and Jordan Simpson, who both doubled twice. Harrison also had two hits, and Chris Ohmstede belted his third home run of the year to lead off the eighth inning.
The win went to Neitzel (5-0), who allowed four runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three.
Wood (2-1) was charged with the loss despite notching a career high nine strikeouts over five innings.
Furman pitching registered 14 strikeouts in the game but walked six.
The Paladins play host to South Carolina on Tuesday at Fluor Field in a 7:00 p.m. game.
