GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Chase Griffin's infield single with two outs in the top of the 11th inning scored Stryker Brown from second base to give Georgia Southern a 1-0 shutout victory over Furman in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
The Eagles (30-19, 12-11 SoCon), who won Friday's series opener, 6-0, will go for the series sweep against the Paladins (18-27, 7-12 SoCon) on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
Furman, which saw its scoreless streak extended to 22 innings in the loss, got a leadoff single from Cameron Whitehead in the bottom of the 11th but failed to score after Whitehead was sacrificed to second base and moved to third on passed ball. Georgia Southern reliever Jason Richman handled Jake Jones' easy ground ball to get the frame's second out, and Richman's replacement, Matt McCall, struck out Greg Harrison swinging to end the game and notch his eighth save of the season.
The Eagles plated the game's lone run in the top of the 11th after the first two batters were retired. Furman pitcher Ryan Morse walked Brown, who advanced to second a wild pitch. More then hit Ryan Cleveland before getting lifted for Alex Abrams, who worked Chase Griffin to a one-ball, two strike count before Griffin looped a soft, one-hop liner behind second base, where it was backhanded by Furman's Jordan Simpson. Unable to get the force at second, Simpson's throw to first base pulled Harrison off the bag, allowing Brown, who was running on contact, to streak home for what proved to be the game winning run.
Georgia Southern's late score spoiled a career best pitching performance by Furman senior right-hander Jacques de Gruy, who was superb over the course of his 116-pitch performance. de Gruy pitched 9 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits and four walks while striking out five.
de Gruy held Georgia Southern hitless until two outs in the fourth inning. In the fifth he stranded a runner at third base by fanning Dalton Busby and Hunter Thomas to end the threat, and in the eighth again stranded a runner at third by retiring a pair of Eagles on infield pops.
In the 10th he allowed a pair of base runners before giving way to Morse with two outs and runners at second and third. Morse struck out Kody Adams to keep the game scoreless.
The Paladins had their own struggles offensively against Georgia Southern starting pitcher Sam Howard, who tossed eight innings of shutout ball while notching six strikeouts.
Howard yielded back-to-back, one-out second inning singles to Jarrod Rickman and Jordan Simpson but checked the threat by striking out Hunter Burton and Griffin Davis looking.
In the fifth Furman's Simpson singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, and stole third, but he could not score after Howard struck out Davis and got Whitehead to ground out.
The Paladins' had another chance to take the lead in the seventh after Ohmstede drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Later, with runners at first and third, Howard induced a double play grounder off the bat of Heath Burton, who was called out on close play at first to end the inning.
Eric Alonzo (3-3) earned the victory after taking over for Howard in the ninth. He allowed a hit and struck out four in two innings of work.
Morse (1-3) took the loss for Furman.
Simpson had two of Furman's six hits while Griffin and Garrett Chapman had two hits apiece for Georgia Southern, which tallied just five total hits in the contest.
