Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Aaron Mizell drove in three runs and Georgia Southern tallied in four consecutive innings to erase a one-run deficit en route to a 7-2 victory over Furman in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
The win gave Georgia Southern (31-19, 13-11 SoCon) the three-game series sweep against Furman (18-28, 7-13 SoCon), which scored only two runs in the three-game set in the final SoCon regular season series between the two programs.
Furman led 2-1 after two innings before Georgia Southern scored twice in the third to take a 3-2 lead following a two-out RBI double by Mizell into the left field corner that scored Kody Adams and a Stryker Brown double to left field that scored Mizell.
The Eagles added single runs in the fourth and fifth against Paladin starting pitcher Tyler Wood (5-2) for a 5-2 lead, and closed out the scoring with two more runs in the sixth on a Ben Morgan RBI single and Mizell's second sacrifice fly of the game.
Matt McCall (3-2) earned the victory in relief of GSU starter Ryan Frederick, working 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball after coming on the fourth inning. He allowed four hits and walk while striking out three.
Wood was tagged for five runs, four of which were earned, on by eight hits over five innings. He issued one base on balls and fanned five.
Georgia Southern had 11 hits to Furman's 10. Four players — Adams, Morgan C.J. Brazil, and Dalton Busby — had two hits apiece for the Eagles, who roped four doubles in the contest. Adams scored three of GSU's seven runs, and Brazil crossed the dish twice.
Furman was paced a the plate by freshman Carter Grote, who went 3-for-4 in his first action since sustaining a knee injury last Friday against the Citadel. Jake Jones doubled and had two hits to lead Furman.
The Paladins took a 2-1 lead in the second following a pair of Georgia Southern errors, but the Paladins' bid to grab command early failed as Furman stranded eight runners on base over the first three innings, including the bases loaded in the first and third innings. The Paladins left 13 on base for the game.
Furman entertains East Tennessee State this Wednesday in a 5:00 p.m. game (new game time) at Latham Stadium.
