Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman is set to resume its Southern Conference baseball rivalry with VMI tonight when the Paladins and Keydets open a three-game baseball series at Latham Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
The teams will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
VMI and Furman last met on the baseball field during the 2003 season in the Keydets' final year as members of the SoCon before departing for the Big South Conference. VMI returned to the SoCon fold this past summer and to its diamond rivalry with Furman, which began as league members in 1955. The Paladins lead the all-time series 56-25.
The Keydets (7-15, 2-4 SoCon) come to Greenville fresh off an impressive 7-6 win over nationally ninth-ranked Virginia on Tuesday. VMI dropped two of three league games against both Wofford and Samford.
Furman (12-15, 2-4 SoCon) lost a 5-4 decision at Clemson on Tuesday in its last outing, yielding the game winning run in the ninth inning on a bases loaded hit batsman.
The Paladins will throw senior right-hander Matt Solter (0-2, 4.81 ERA) in tonight's opener, followed by a pair of freshmen in Saturday's twinbill. Left-hander Grant Schuermann (2-0, 4.72 ERA) is expected to get the start in game one and Will Gaddis (2-2, 5.12 ERA), a right-hander, in the series finale.
Furman is led at the plate by freshman designated hitter Blake Chisolm (.388, 0 HR, 18 RBI) and junior second baseman Jordan Simpson (.375, 7 HR, 22 RBI). Junior left fielder Griffin Davis (.347, 1 HR, 13 RBI) is enjoying a solid season, as is Jake Jones (.344, 2 HR, 8 RBI), a senior right fielder.
