Furman had its string of three straight SoCon series victories snapped over the weekend after dropping two of three games at Woffford. The Paladins will play host to arch-rival The Citadel in the final league series of the campaign beginning on Thursday at Latham Stadium.
Southern Conference Tournament action gets underway next Tuesday at Charleston's Joseph P. Riley Park with a single elimination play-in game between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds. Furman is currently tied for fifth in the league standings with Western Carolina and VMI, all of whom sport 10-11 SoCon records.
Furman is expected to start junior right-hander Ryan Griffith (0-1, 2.41 ERA) this evening. It will mark the Gainesville, Ga., native's first career start following 30 relief appearances over the last three seasons.
The Paladins are paced offensively by freshman designated hitter Blake Chisolm (.354, 3 HR, 32 RBI) and junior second baseman Jordan Simpson (.351, 14 HR, 43 RBI).
Furman ranks third nationally in home runs with the 60 clouts, the second highest season tally in program history. Simpson's 14 home runs leads the team and is followed by senior All-SoCon third baseman Chris Ohmstede's 12 roundtrippers.
