Box Score DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Durin O'Linger pitched five innings of effective ball and Brian Fortier went 4-for-4 and scored two runs to help Davidson beat Furman, 4-3, in Saturday baseball action at Wilson Field.
The win gives Davidson (9-9) the series victory over Furman (8-10), which will try to avoid the three-game series sweep in Sunday's 1:00 p.m. finale.
O'Linger gave up a pair of first inning runs but settled down to check the Paladins over the next four frames while the Wildcat offense produced a run in the second, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth for a 4-2 lead.
Eric Jones' RBI groundout in the second cut Furman's advantage to 2-1, and in the fourth Jones drove in his second run with a bases loaded single to score Fortier and tie it. The next batter, Andrew Pope, put Davidson up, 3-2, with a sacrifice fly.
Fortier's RBI single to left field in the fifth upped the Wildcats' lead to a 4-2 and chased Furman starting pitcher Matthew Quarles.
Quarles' replacement, Harry Norman, gave the Paladins a chance, pitching 3 2/3 innings of two-hit shutout relief, but the Paladin offense could manage just one run over the final eight innings — a Brandon Elmy RBI single in the seventh that scored Jabari Richards.
Elmy drove in two of Furman's three-runs, including a sacrifice fly in the first inning that got the Paladins on the scoreboard. Richards, meanwhile, continued his blazing stretch at the plate, going 3-for-4 to notch his sixth consecutive multi-hit performance. The Paladin freshman also stole two bases.
Furman, which finished with 11 hits — all singles — got a 3-for-5 worksheet from Jordan Simpson.
Davidson finished with nine hits.
O'Linger (2-2) earned the victory, allowing two runs on seven hits. He recorded seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
The loss went to Quarles (2-1), who yielded all four Davidson runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.
