Box Score DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Andrew Pope's bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Max Bazin from third base to lift Davidson to a 4-3 victory over Furman in Sunday afternoon baseball action at Wilson Field.
The victory completed the three-game series sweep for Davidson (10-9) while Furman (8-11) fell for the seventh time in the last eight games. The loss was also the Paladins' seventh straight in its series with the Wildcats.
Furman battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game on a Jabari Richards RBI single in the seventh inning that scored pinch-runner Chadwick Word.
The Paladins threatened in the ninth with a pair of singles by Griffin Davis and Matt Towarnicky, but couldn't cash in.
Davidson didn't miss its chance in the ninth, opening the frame with a Brian Fortier dribble single to third base. After a sacrifice advanced Bazin, who came on as pinch runner, Paladin reliever Nolan Mullen walked Jake Sidwell and Andrew Born on eight pitches to load the bases. Mullen's replacement, Steven Fondu, got ahead of Pope with two strikes but ran the count full before Pope stroked the game winner into centerfield.
Furman grabbed a first inning lead for the fourth consecutive game on Jordan Simpson's RBI grounder that scored Carter Grote.
It remained that way until the third when Paladin starting pitcher Jake Crawford made a mistake on an inside pitch that Matt Tovsky belted over the fence down the right field line for a three-run home run to give Davidson a 3-1 lead.
The Paladins got a run back in the fifth after Sims Griffith led off with a single and scored on a Towarnicky sacrifice bunt.
Griffith had three of Furman's 10 hits, including its only extra base hit of the series — a one-out double in the second.
Crawford surrendered only three hits in 6 1/3 innings. Davidson only managed six hits in the game.
Mullen (0-1) tallied four strikeouts in the seventh and eighth innings before running into trouble in the ninth. He took the loss.
The win went to Josh Smutzer (1-1), who worked the final three innings, allowing four hits.
Furman will play its eighth road game in the last nine outings on Tuesday at Gardner-Webb in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
