Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Reed Rohlman sprinted home on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to give 17th-ranked Clemson the lead and the Tigers added an insurance run in the ninth to beat Furman, 9-7, in college baseball action Tuesday evening at Fluor Field.
The win improves Clemson to 18-6 on the season while Furman falls to 10-14.
Trailing 7-6, the Tigers took advantage of three walks in the seventh inning to tie it on Eli White's RBI single that scored Jordan Greene. An inning later Rohlman drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Paladin error, and moved to third on a sacrifice before sprinting home on a wild pitch by Paladin reliever Nolan Mullen.
In the ninth, Chase Pinder led off with a double and later scored on another wild pitch.
Furman out-hit Clemson 13-7, but Paladin pitching forfeited the advantage by issuing 13 walks, hitting two batsmen, and uncorking four wild pitches.
Rohlman gave Clemson a 1-0 lead in the second after getting hit by a pitch and scoring on a Drew Wharton single.
Furman struck for four runs in the third inning against Tigers starting pitcher Jake Higginbotham, the big blow coming on Brandon Elmy's bases loaded double off the wall in deep left center field. Jake Crawford followed with a single to drive home Elmy for a 4-1 lead.
The Paladins' advantage didn't last long as the Tigers worked a pair of walks from Furman starting pitcher Harry Norman in the fourth, and K.J. Bryant tied it at 4-4 with a three-run home run over the Green Monster in left field.
A Sims Griffith infield single in the fourth inning scored Carter Grote from third base to give Furman a 5-4 lead.
Both teams tallied a pair of runs in the sixth — Clemson's keyed by doubles by Chase Pinder and Rohlman, and Furman's on a Grote RBI single and Griffith run scoring double that gave the Paladins a 7-6 lead.
Clemson's Pat Krall (2-0) was the beneficiary of the Tigers' late runs, earning the victory after pitching shutout ball over the final 3 2/3 innings. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three.
The loss was charged to Nolan Mullen (0-2), who allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits over 2 1/3 innings. He walked two and fanned three.
Paladin starting pitcher Harry Norman only yielded two hits over four innings but was victimized by six walks and a hit batsman that contributed to his four runs allowed.
Griffith led Furman's 13-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Grote had two hits and scored three runs. Crawford, Landon Kay, and Matt Towarnicky also had two hits apiece for the Paladins.
Pinder went 2-for-5 and scored two runs to lead Clemson, and Rohlman had two hits and scored twice.
